January 16, 2007: TRION WORLD NETWORK TAPS RUSS BROWN AND GREG BARWIS TO HEAD PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT AND NETWORK OPERATIONS
Broadband Games Publisher Combines Expertise from Video Game and Online Game Industries
Redwood City, Calif. - Jan. 16, 2007 - Trion World Network (Trion) has named Russ Brown Senior Development Director at Trion's Corporate Headquarters in Redwood City, California and has named Greg Barwis Director of IT and Network Operations at Trion's Technology Center in Austin, Texas. Trion, the publisher and developer of games for the broadband era, was founded in January of 2006 to revolutionize entertainment by combining the best of online, gaming and traditional media. Russ Brown comes to Trion from Electronic Arts (EA), where he established a reputation for exceptional execution as a Development Director on renowned franchises such as The Lord of the Rings and James Bond. Brown has shipped more than 30 titles on consoles and PCs in his 20 year career, which started in 1987 at SSI on the Dungeons and Dragons "Gold Box" games. He stayed with SSI through its acquisition by Mattel until 2000, moving from level to lead engineer, and eventually to Director of Engineering.
At Trion, Brown will leverage his development acumen to establish production processes for the company's game development teams and to guide those teams through all stages of development. His leadership will ensure Trion delivers the highest quality products. "After speaking with Jon [Van Caneghem, co-founder, president and CCO] and Lars [Buttler, co-founder and CEO], I knew I had found a place with a company that will drive the future of digital entertainment," Brown said.
Greg Barwis joins Trion with more than 20 years of IT and engineering experience, most recently from world-wide online games publisher and developer, NCsoft. At NCSoft, he administered Windows networks of over 1000 systems across nine sites in the US and Europe, including planning, implementation and deployment, as well as several intricate server migrations and launches. Barwis' impressive career began with the U.S. Army, where he was the de facto support staff for two organizations comprising 500 individuals each. Thereafter he moved to Origin Systems, which saw him earn his MCSE certification and begin back-end infrastructure development and maintenance.
At Trion, Barwis will use his experience and expertise in hardware, systems software, & networking to design infrastructure that optimizes performance, cost, and scalability. By focusing on infrastructure design concurrently with game development, Trion's platform will offer unparalleled quality of service. "I believe that what Trion is creating has the potential to redefine broadband entertainment, and the opportunity to be there for the genesis of something so significant is one not to be missed," Barwis noted.
Dr. Lars Buttler, CEO of Trion World Network, reciprocates the excitement, "Russ and Greg bring tremendous experience in establishing the best practices of design and development for both video and online games, as well as an unrivaled ability to execute." Trion continues to succeed in attracting world-class talent from both major gaming worlds-traditional video games, with proven top earning titles and production values, and online games, with unique knowledge in design and operation of large-scale game worlds.
